Periodontal in cats and dogs
by Maria Ulfa, DRH

Periodontal disease is a chronic and progressive. at the advanced stage jaw bone around the teeth shattered bone and tooth loss. This process took many years. Bone that has been destroyed can not be repaired. However, appropriate treatment regularly, can prevent more severe damage. To deal with periodontal disease, is absolutely necessary good cooperation from the owner of the animal.

Signs of illness

In the initial stage, the animals usually do not show any symptoms at all but already there is halitosis (foul odor from the mouth) and a layer of tartar. The enamel is most often seen in the upper canines and molars and the thickest on the upper molars were great (fourth premolar in dogs). If periodontal disease has hit the bone  (in the second and fourth stages), animals feel pain when eating or when its snout is held. Pain causes decreased appetite, or completely lost , so that the animals become emaciated. Saliva thick , foul-smelling around the molars are up or down , or hanging on the side of the mouth. Saliva can also be mixed with blood.

Disease Management

To be able to check the teeth and determine treatment, the animals must be anesthetized. Severe halitosis, usually indicate the presence of infection should be controlled before the tooth is handled.Because periodontal disease is caused by tartar, the tartar must be removed. The process is called dental scaling. Although scaling can be done manually , but better is by ultrasonic scaler, which uses high-frequency vibrations to destroy tartar . This method does not cause damage to the enamel of the teeth.Tartar that needs to be cleaned not only visible, but also hidden under the gums, in the subgingival sulcus. Wobbly tooth must be removed. In cats frequent damage to the surface of the tooth (caries), on the teeth adjacent to the gums. Teeth like this are also usually should be removed though not waver.Once tartar cleaned, then the owner must keep the animal dental hygiene by brushing your dog or cat regularly. Dental Scaling eraser should be repeated every six months or once a year , depending on home care and reformation of tartar.

Prevention

To maintain the health of our beloved pets , the prevention of tartar should be done as early as possible. Brushing the teeth of animals started young age is the best prevention when no toothbrush and toothpaste specially for animals, can use a soft toothbrush and toothpaste for babies. What needs to be cleared is the outer tooth surfaces, because this is usually formed plaque and tartar. Tooth should be brushed once or twice a day.Solid food can prevent plaque and tartar,  for example,  bone - reinforcement of cowhide, or dog/cat dry food. Can also be given of Oral Care food, designed specifically to prevent and reduce tartar.Good dental care, not just to prevent bad breath is not bad, but it will also reduce the problem of diseases in our beloved pets at an older age.
